Standard MHFA (sMHFA)

In this course, participants learn how to assist adults who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Standard Mental Health First Aid Course

​​​Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training helps mobilise and empower adults in the workplace and community by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise, understand and respond to another adult experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.

With a focus on improved mental health literacy and early intervention, Standard MHFA is for all adults who want to understand mental health, mental wellness and how to support someone with more confidence and understanding. The MHFA course also works to reduce stigma as misinformation about mental health problems.

Format: This is a 12-hour face-to-face workshop.

What's Covered in the Course?

Participants learn how and where to get help when someone is developing a mental illness, what help research has shown to be effective and how to provide first aid in crisis situations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • How to recognise signs of mental health problems – depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use problems​;

  • How to provide initial support to someone who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis;

  • ALGEE - the practical, evidence-based Mental Health First Aid Action Plan;

  • How to recognise and respond to the following mental health crises - suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drug use, aggressive behaviours.

Why do the sMHFA Course?

Evaluations consistently show that Mental Health First Aid training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided.

Standard Mental Health First Aid is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Standard Mental Health First Aid training is designed for adults to support other adults. Course participants learn how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical evidence-based action plan.

Providing Mental Health First Aid training can help whole communities to:

  • Intervene Early - Recognise the warning signs of mental health problems

  • Provide Skills - Provide the skills needed to speak openly and accurately about mental health

  • Respond in a Crisis - Respond in crisis situations where someone may be at risk of harm

  • Reduce Stigma - Reduce stigma and increase support for someone with mental health problems
