The Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Suicide course is for any interested adult. Learn practical skills to improve your confidence to provide mental health first aid to someone who is feeling suicidal.

Conversations about Suicide

In this course you will learn the skills and acquire the knowledge required to safely have a conversation with a person who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Learning Outcomes of This Workshop:

  • At the completion of the course you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person. This is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide.

  • The MHFA Conversations about Suicide course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it. Specific postvention support services can be found at the beyondblue website.

The course will teach you how to:

  • Identify warning signs of suicide

  • Have a conversation with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Confidently support a person in crisis

Why Attend This Workshop?

Suicide has long been a taboo topic, and has a lot of stigma surrounding the topic. For this reason people find the subject of suicide uncomfortable and difficult to discuss. For most, simply saying 'suicide' out loud feels uncomfortable. The course equips adults with the skills to recognise and respond to suicidal thinking and behaviours, and also practise having conversation about suicide and how to ask someone if they are having thoughts about suicide.

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided over time.

Providing Mental Health First Aid training can help whole communities to:

  • Intervene Early - Recognise the warning signs of mental health problems in young people

  • Provide Skills - Provide the skills needed to speak openly and accurately about mental health

  • Respond in a Crisis - Respond in crisis situations where a young person may be at risk of harm

  • Reduce Stigma - Reduce stigma and increase support for young people with mental health problems
